Story[edit]

Character Quest 1[edit]

No Such Thing As Too Prepared

While Cynthia is out enjoying Elzion, the Archeology Buff appears, crying that he lost a very important drone.

Cynthia is admiring Elzion’s technology on a walk with Aldo when the Archeology Buff runs up to them both and asks if they have seen a drone flying around, but they haven’t. He explains he got his hands on a really important drone for his research, but it flew away when he turned it on. He runs off in a fit of sadness to look for the drone, and the pair decides to visit Za’ol so that Cynthia can learn more about drones.

When they arrive, Za’ol shows the two how to operate a drone with basic voice commands and procedures. Cynthia decides she has learned enough to start looking for the Archaeology Buff’s drone.

They ask around Theta District, as Cynthia is passionate about the Archeology’s Buff’s attachment to his drone. Based on the information received, she deduces that the drone is on Route 99 and tells Aldo to look for it there.

They travel to the highway and see a vintage-looking drone and identify it as the one the Archaeology Buff was looking for. Cynthia attempts to repeat what she learned from Za’ol on it, but due to it being an older model, does not reboot as intended and begins firing at the pair. They initiate combat and break it. They thus decide to go apologize to the Archaeology Buff for destroying his drone. Unbeknownst to them, Za’ol had been watching the interaction to confirm something to himself.

The pair meets up with the Archaeology Buff in Gamma District and inform him of their mistake, but suddenly Za’ol interrupts the conversation with a fixed and functioning drone. Everyone shares a laugh as Cynthia tells the drone to not run away anymore.

Character Quest 2[edit]

The Tale She Wrote

Cynthia finds a famous children’s story in Miglance Castle. However, when she opens it, she finds a strange message.

Cynthia and Aldo are in Miglance Castle looking through its collection of books. Cynthia finds a book that has seemingly fallen from the shelf and recognizes the title The Lonely Monster and the Kind King by Baron Von Bookington as a fairy tale that she used to read when she was younger. She invites Aldo to read it but most of the pages are blank. In one, words suddenly appear telling them to go to Unigan, and the pair decides to find the truth by following its directions.

They walk out into the capital, and Cynthia finds a new message in the book, telling them to find a troubled man in the street. They find him, but upon inspection he seemed to be saying the same phrase over and over, not paying attention to them. The book suddenly swoops up to the man and appears to eat him. They see a mother and daughter coming their way, and try stopping them, but the book pays no attention to them.

A new message then appears in the book, telling the two to find a crying girl in front of the inn. Before they can warn her, the book goes over and eats her. They decide to take the book somewhere else where it will do less damage. Before they can leave, however, they bump into a despondent young man who is repeating his words over and over. The book eats him too, and starts floating away after it said that its magic had returned.

Cynthia figures out what the book is doing, but tells Aldo she will explain once they catch up to it. She predicts the book will be in a port town, so the two head to Rinde to catch up with the book.

They arrive and hear news of a man-eating book. Cynthia explains to Aldo that the book is eating the characters from the fairy tale that have somehow jumped into the real world and confirms it when the book arrives to eat two other characters right in front of their eyes. Cynthia then says that the last character would probably be in a forest, so they head to the Moonlight Forest along with the book.

They find the last character, but also see a monster about to attack it. They defeat it, but when Cynthia opens the book she finds the conclusion to still be missing. Aldo figures out that the monster was also a character in the story, and Cynthia confirms that maybe the original story was changed to exclude the monster by the time she read it in her time.

They go back to Miglance Castle, and Aldo suggests that Cynthia writes down what she remembers so that the fairy tale would be the same as the one she read. The book agrees, and after some reluctance Cynthia finishes the book from memory. They both feel relieved that everything turned out alright, but Aldo wonders if her changes were what caused her to read a different version of the fairy tale in the first place.

Character Quest 3[edit]

Assault of the Destroyer

Cynthia finally arrives in Antiquity where wildlife is thriving, but she quickly hears somebody calling for help.

Cynthia and Aldo are admiring the magic of Antiquity on the Derismo Highroad when they hear a child calling for help. They find a boy with a pendant running from a golem, but, as they go save him, the boy yells at the golem to stop and it does. The boy’s uncle arrives and tells them that it resists their normal attacks and that they should go hide in Palsifal Palace.

Once they are safe, the uncle (actually a friend of the boy’s father) says that the artificial golem was created by the boy’s father to show how magic research could be practical. The golem went out of control and killed the boy’s father. Cynthia notes that the golem didn’t appear to be out of control to her and offers her help in finding out the truth about the golem. The uncle then explains that the golem needed some key to control it, and Cynthia suggests that the key may be the pendant that the boy keeps as his father’s memento. The uncle realizes that maybe the golem went after the boy for his pendant, and comes up with a plan to lure the golem to the Keruri Highroad to avoid any more damage.

They wait to ambush the golem, and when it arrives Cynthia sees that the golem stops when it was ordered to. However, the uncle destroys the golem with the pendant and digs through the rubble to find its magic core. He reveals that his intention all along was to get the core from the golem, and runs off leaving the boy questioning everything he had been told about his late father.

Cynthia and Aldo consult the boy and decide to follow him to the Tower of Time, where they find the uncle planning to create his own ultimate golem. After confronting him, they learn that the boy’s father actually died from an incurable disease and had created the Guardian Golem to protect his son once he was dead, and that the uncle wants to use his research to mass-produce golems. The group tries to stop him from proceeding with the research, but the uncle summons a golem to fight on his behalf.

The uncle surrenders his possessions and runs away once his golem is defeated. The group takes a look at the research notes, and finds a hand-written note addressed to the boy about the golem and how much he loved him. The boy is saddened at how he can never see his father’s golem again, but Cynthia reveals that there is a way that he can.

They gather up all of the golem’s remains and head back to Palsifal Palace, where Cynthia revives the golem using her knowledge of magic combined with the research notes. However, she has transferred ownership of the golem onto her by accident, since the golem follows whoever’s magic is in its core. Cynthia thus decides to leave Aldo and stay with the boy until she finds a way to return the golem to him.

Character Quest AS[edit]

The Budding Dawn

Cynthia enjoys a day in the auction district with Aldo and Suzanne. But when she makes to return home to the book…

After having some tea with Aldo and Sophia in Iota District, Cynthia returns to her room in the book to clean it up, but instead reminisces about her past and cannot bring herself to touch anything, not even willing to open the curtains. As a matter of fact, she hasn’t touched anything ever since she was sealed inside the book. Suddenly, her old nurse Dara appears in the room to wake her up.

Cynthia is confused, as no one has ever entered her room within the book and Dara was actually killed on the day her kingdom was attacked. Dara helps her change into her Avesta Style and tells her that she is supposed to perform the levitation ritual. Cynthia starts questioning her about what is happening, but they are interrupted by the brigadiers who killed Dara in Cynthia’s past and imprisoned her inside the book.

Indeed, they kill Dara and proceed to imprison Cynthia inside the book again. However, Cynthia finds herself back inside her room, as Dara comes back to wake her up. When the brigadiers come back as well, Cynthia tries to fight them off before they kill Dara, but is unable to hit them and is forced to see them kill Dara another time. Time repeats itself again right before she is sealed into the book.

In the meantime, Sophia asks Aldo about Cynthia, who has missed their appointment. Worried about her, they decide to check her book in the Macminal Museum and find it surrounded by miasma, as Sophia can sense a strong magic coming from within it. It rejects Aldo and Sophia resolves to use the power of her grimoire.

Inside the book, Cynthia asks Dara if she remembers the story of the book fairies, who were playful fairies that lived in books and could change their stories of play in the story themselves. They could be very naughty, but even then, they were beloved friends and beloved neighbors to the sweet and clever princess.

Cynthia thus asks the Book Fairy to stop making her relive that day and asks her why she did that. It turns out that the Book Fairy did it because she saw how lonely Cynthia was and wanted to make her feel better after having seen her cry so many times. Although Cynthia appreciates the thought, she wants her to stop, but the Book Fairy flies off to pull everyone inside the book to keep her company.

The seal opens and Cynthia comes out to find Aldo and Sophia. They rush together to find the Book Fairy. Cynthia tries to reason with her, but the Book Fairy attacks them, so they are forced to calm her down with force. After the fight, Cynthia thanks the fairy for helping her move forward and promises to read books together.

Cynthia then thanks Aldo and Sophia as well and returns home to finally open the curtains of her room.
