Profile[edit]

Introduction Dialog[edit]

I am Bertrand. A mercenary just looking to earn some money. This cloak? What of it? It’s of no significance. I simply like to wear it. It’s been some time since I’ve had a fateful encounter like this. Please allow me to accompany you for a while.

Bio[edit]

A former knight of legendary skill, his many exploits have given him the name Shield of Miglance. He has a metallic cape made of stab-proof metal thread. The loss of his eye in battle almost forced him into retirement, but instead he was given a special position by the king. He has now left that post and is making his money as a mercenary.

Story[edit]

Character Quest 1[edit]

Knight Today, Mercenary Tomorrow

Bertrand meets a girl in Rinde who wants to go to the Nuaru Uplands. Then, he accepts her request like a common mercenary…?

A brat in Rinde wants to hire Bertrand and Aldo to take her to Nuaru Uplands, as her parents are too busy to take her. While Bertrand doesn’t accept her pocket money, he demands to ask her parents first for permission.

They go and ask the brat’s father, who denies her request at first, but changes his mind when Bertrand shows him that he is not an ordinary mercenary, owning a medal from the Royal House of Miglance as a former knight. He explains that the young brat reminds him of someone he used to protect, but has since left the nest.

As Aldo gets everyone a room in Unigan to let the brat rest, the brat asks Bertrand if he is gonna protect her with his cape the same way he used to protect the person she reminds him of, but he just tells her not to tempt fate.

The following morning, Aldo asks the brat why she wants to go to Nuaru Uplands, but she hesitates to answer, so Bertrand intervenes telling Aldo that she doesn’t have to tell them and that mercenaries don’t ask questions.

They reach a high point of Nuaru Uplands where the brat can see the castle. As Bertrand tells the brat that the view will be even better once the castle is fixed, she is about to tell him that it may not be possible when a monster approaches and Bertrand is forced to protect the brat with his cape. Aldo and Bertrand defeat the monster and decide to go back to Rinde, as the brat is satisfied with what she saw and how she was protected.

Back in Rinde, the brat’s father thanks Aldo and Bertrand and reveals that they are moving due to his job, so the brat wanted to see their special place one last time. She tries to make Bertrand promise to take her again once she comes back, but he doesn’t. After father and daughter leave, Bertrand reminisces about the one who has flown the nest, but changes the subject when inquired by Aldo, stating that it was the first time he has done a job with a partner and that it wasn’t so bad.

Character Quest 2[edit]

Shield of Miglance

Bertrand received an anonymous job request. Ever since then, he’s been getting similar requests - not suspicious at all.

Bertrand notices someone following him and Aldo in Rinde and tells him to show himself: it is a man with a letter of employment for him. The job is in Karek Swampland, and Aldo decides to join.

They meet a soldier who tells them that he has received reports of beasts’ activities close to Unigan and wants them to patrol Karek Swampland, while the knights look for the beasts’ hideout in Serena Coast. While their patrol is peaceful, they are informed that the beasts are indeed in Serena Coast, so they arrive there despite it not being in Bertrand’s contract.

Bertrand and Aldo approach Lakhesis and his troops as the beasts are using cannons against them and tell him to fall back. They go take care of the cannons that are no match for Bertrand’s cape, creating the perfect opening for Lakhesis and his men.

Following the victorious battle, Lakhesis thanks them and asks them to meet him in Miglance Castle, where Bertrand voices his suspicions that the anonymous sender of his letter of employment is Lakhesis, as he has received similar one all concerning Miglance protection whenever he needed some money. Lakhesis denies to know anything about it and they bicker for a bit just like in the past, as they have been friends for a long time.

Before they leave, Lakhesis asks Bertrand if he is closer to a solution to his problem, but he answers that he doesn’t know and that once she comes back to the castle she won’t be needing him around. Lakhesis laments that there is always gonna be a place for him in the Order.

Character Quest 3[edit]

Defender of the Future!

Bertrand takes on another anonymous job request from Lakhesis. However, this time, the details are a little different...

A man in incognito approaches Aldo and Bertrand in Unigan and asks them to meet him in Serena Coast for another assignment. As they wonder what Lakhesis needs, Aldo takes notice that this time things seem a little different.

The man tells Aldo and Bertrand that he used to do magic in the castle, but the same man that funded his research stole it and accused him of wanting to sell it to a foreign country, while he wants to do so himself. Desperate and a wanted criminal, he asked Lakhesis for help and was sent to Bertrand, who deduces that the true culprit may be in Rinde.

While searching, they are approached by guards looking for the wanted man, but they leave them alone once they recognize Bertrand. The magic scholar suggests they look in Rucyana Sands, a shortcut to the thief’s hometown.

They finally find the thief, who has already finished the scholar’s work and summons a Golem. While the thief wants to use it for destruction, the scholar says that it was built to help rebuild the castle, since he wants to help the princess create the ideal kingdom. As Bertrand flashes back to a young Miyu inspiring him even more to protect the kingdom, the scholar accepts that his Golem must be destroyed, as it is now threatening the princess’ ideal.

With Aldo and Bertrand promising to vouch for him against his false accusations, the magic scholar vows to create a new Golem to help the kingdom.

Back in Unigan, everything is resolved and Bertrand is more convinced than ever to help his princess achieve her ideal kingdom.

Character Quest AS[edit]

The Shield of Miglance Returns

Bertrand and Aldo find numerous footprints left by beasts in the Karek Swampland. As they walk amongst the footprints, a high-pitched scream pierces the air.

While inspecting some footprints in the Karek Swampland, Aldo and Bertrand hear a scream and rush to rescue a young lady from a beast with his tamed Chimera. After doing so, a man named Galgo appears to taunt Bertrand and reveal his alliance with the beasts. He manages to leave unscathed, as Aldo and Bertrand go report his appearance to Lakhesis, after dealing with a tamed Chimera.

At Miglance Castle, they meet Lakhesis as Yipha is requesting help at the temple. Bertrand thanks Yipha for what happened in Rinde, making her extremely happy, even though she keeps her cool in front of him.

After Yipha leaves and Aldo and Bertrand catch Lakhesis up with the situation, Bertrand explains that Galgo used to be a member of the Order, but is now number one in the country’s most wanted list for treason, as he left his men for dead in the battlefield. Lakhesis elaborates that he isn’t the best fighter, but he has a brilliant tactical mind.

Indeed, Galgo was the one who took Bertrand’s eye by first pretending to be hurt and then attacking him from behind with his men. This loss made Bertrand abandon the Order, as he no longer saw himself fit to be the Shield of Miglance.

Lakhesis explains that beasts’ attacks are becoming more and more frequent, exhausting the Order’s forces so much that even Anabel is tired. Aldo, Bertrand, and even Lakhesis thus decide to go search for Galgo, who should be hiding somewhere in the Moonlight Forest.

As the trio encounters a group of beasts, they realize that it was all a trap to leave the castle undefended! Lakhesis decides to stay behind, leaving Aldo and Bertrand free to go back to the castle, but demanding Baruoki White 288 after the battle.

Back at the castle, Aldo buys Bertrand some time with Galgo, who reveals that he committed treason out of jealousy for Lakhesis’ and Bertrand’s glory, as he changes to his Migl Aspida Style, donning his armor of the Royal Order to finally turn his disgrace back into honor. Galgo absorbs the beasts’ power, but is still defeated. He tries an ultimate attack to destroy the castle, but Bertrand manages to push him away with his shield, surviving despite the close vicinity with the blast.

Bertrand decides to take Aldo to the tavern to wait for Lakhesis, having faith that he survived. Indeed, he arrives, albeit later than intended, as he had to file paperwork after the battle. Bertrand, however, figures out that Lakhesis let his men with his paperwork to come drink.

The trio proceeds to toast to victory. Bertrand tells Lakhesis he knows that the latter asked for Baruoki White 288 because it was the drink they had when he became the Shield of Miglance. He notices that the drink seems a bit different, as Lakhesis puts it: “the older the drink, the more complex the flavor.” They laugh it off as the two partners they are, as noted by Aldo.
