Story[edit]

Quest 1: Sending Them Off[edit]

The quest begins with Aldo and Dunarith at Nuaru Uplands with Bran communicating to Dunarith that he has received a request from a client. Aldo is surprised that Dunarith is able to understand Bran and asks to try talking with the bird. Dunarith fools around with Aldo using ventriloquy and pretends that Bran is talking, finding Aldo's reaction funny. He then explains that he and Bran communicate through their own language and that his clients write to him, so Bran does not need to speak. Dunarith reveals that his job is to send the souls of deceased beastfolk to their proper place, and is referred to as a Traveling Purifier. Aldo and Dunarith then set off to the Serena Coast to meet the client.

After meeting with the client, Dunarith introduces himself and tells him that he used to assist with funerals on Snake Bone Island before coming to the mainland. The client explains that his recently deceased wife was also from Snake Bone Island, but he has no idea how to arrange a funeral from that region. Dunarith explains to Aldo that funerals on Snake Bone Island are unique and are referred to as "Ascensions", where the Winged Being leads a soul that has departed from the body to the afterlife to rest in peace. Dunarith begins preparations for the ceremony and asks the client for a memento in which the wife's soul can reside. The client recommends that Dunarith find his son near the cliffs of the coast and ask him.

Dunarith, Aldo, and the client find the client's son. The client asks his son for his wife's dagger, but the son refuses to give it to them and declares that he does not want to say goodbye to his mom. Dunarith walks forward to the son and explains the importance of the Ascension, but the son calls it nonsense, claiming that his mom is staying with him and runs away. The client apologizes for his son's behavior and Aldo reassures him that it was not his fault, asking Dunarith if there is another object that they could use. Dunarith tells them that, unfortunately, the dagger might be their only choice and states that souls should never be prevented from traveling to the afterlife. Aldo agrees to go after the son, but Bran soon tells Dunarith that he is traveling towards Karek Swampland, a place with vicious monsters all year round. The three hurry to Karek Swampland to save the son from any trouble.

The party of three finds the son facing off against a Lizzy. The son calls for his mom to help, causing the dagger to start shining. Dunarith then calls for Bran who attacks the Lizzy, distracting it. The son runs towards his dad and Aldo and Dunarith begin to fight the Lizzy. After defeating it, they check if the son is hurt and the client scolds his son for his actions, asking for the dagger. However, the son claims that his mother was protecting him through the shining light. He believes that the dagger is his mom and does not want to let it go. Dunarith decides to call for Bran who projects an image of the son's mom in front of him. The image reminds the son that he had promised to become a mighty beast and that she could not be around him forever. Dunarith tells the son that his mom is worried about his reliance on the dagger and cannot move on to the afterlife so she is talking to him through Bran. He further explains that all beings can only exist where they are supposed to be and the deceased will be in pain if they are kept in this world. Horrified, the son declares that he does not want that and the image reassures him before disappearing. Dunarith tells the son that he will one day meet with his mom again and the son finally agrees to say goodbye. They then move to Nuaru Uplands to hold the Ascension.

At Nuaru Uplands, Dunarith explains that it is the last place where the departing soul can see, hear, and feel. The son says that his mom had told him that the smell of the breeze at Nuaru Uplands reminded her of her hometown which was why he had tried to travel through Karek Swampland to get there. Dunarith starts the Ascension and tells the son that Bran will take care of the dagger and soul, guiding her to the afterlife. Bran flies away and the client and his son bid farewell to their wife and mom. Dunarith tells them not to worry anymore as her soul has reached the afterlife. The client thanks him and asks him about the cost of his service, but Dunarith tells him that it has already been taken care of by one of his wife's relatives.

As the client and his son walk away, Dunarith talks to someone named Reliath about already being paid well, prompting Aldo to ask what he meant. Dunarith tells Aldo not to worry about it. Aldo then asks if Dunarith was the one pretending to be the boy's mother at Karek Swampland, but Dunarith tells him that it was a message from his mother and he was just speaking for her. Aldo also asks about the client causing Dunarith to reveal that the request actually came from the deceased herself and Bran has sensed her request. Aldo continues to question Dunarith, but Dunarith states that Aldo would have helped no matter where the request came from. Bran then flies near Aldo and Dunarith tells him that Bran had taken a liking to him because he is so pure. Aldo brushes it off but Dunarith reassures him that Bran has never been friendly with anyone besides himself. Aldo claims that a monster who guides souls to the after life is more believable than Dunarith himself, telling him that it is time to go and walks away. The quest ends with Dunarith mentioning that there is something that he forgot to tell Aldo.

Quest 2: Wandering Spirit[edit]

Aldo accompanies Dunarith to a spot in Serena Coast where Bran has supposedly sensed a soul. When Aldo asks questions about how Bran senses souls, Dunarith explains that each soul has a different smell and summons Bran to smell Aldo’s. According to Bran, Aldo’s soul “pretty much smells like a hairy monster,” prompting him to point out that he bathes every day. Back on track, Dunarith says that the soul he was looking for isn’t there anymore, but has left behind a sense of regret.

As they talk, Dunarith notices that someone is listening to them and tells him to come out: it is a man with a scythe (Zeviro) who knows Dunarith and is surprised that he made friends. He too is there for that elusive soul and asks Dunarith to perform the ceremony, directing him and Aldo to Rinde, but warning Dunarith that he mustn’t hold back his beast form.

Aldo and Dunarith find three children accusing a girl and a beast boy of not letting the soul of a beast in peace and making troubles in Rinde. The beast boy steps between the girl and the bullies and the girl cries that she cannot stand it anymore and something pushes the bullies, who accuse her of using her powers and being cursed, before running away.

The girl runs away too and Aldo comments that she must be the soul they have been looking for. The beast boy overhears them and knows everything about the scythe wielding guys. He reveals that he cannot see the girl, who was his best friend that got killed by a monster in front of him, as he couldn’t protect her. Dunarith explains that those who witness the end of a life will not be able to see the spirit of that person. Since the boy wants to help her, as a soul that lingers for too long may become evil, he joins Aldo and Dunarith to Serena Coast, where the girl should be.

They find the girl, who is sad about breaking her promise to the beast boy to be together forever, and explain that she may become evil. She says that she has to go to a place where she can be herself first: the place where the tragedy happened, so that she can apologize to her friend.

They reach the spot, their secret hideout, where the girl reveals that the beast boy sacrificed himself to save her and apologizes to him, even though she cannot see him! Suddenly, the monster that had first attacked the children appears and the beast boy pushes it away with the same mysterious power that had previously pushed the bullies away.

Aldo realizes that it was the beast boy who has that power and, after taking care of the monster, Dunarith explains that the soul that smells of regret is actually that of the beast boy, who had indeed sacrificed himself to save his friend, but forgot about it because her life meant more to him than his own.

The beast boy realizes that he is the reason people think that the girl is cursed, although he was just protecting her, and is ready to move on, but his friend doesn’t want him to. When Dunarith suggests he lets this one go, despite the fact that the beast boy will eventually become an evil spirit, the girl firmly states that it cannot happen. The two strong children thus say their goodbyes and Bran takes the beast boy’s soul away, while Aldo and Dunarith take the girl back to Rinde.

The man with the scythe reappears to congratulate them on their job and Dunarith introduces him as his employer, explaining that the souls that go through Ascension are delivered to him. He reveals that he knew that the beast boy was the soul they were looking for from the start, but had to bond with him first to remind him of who he was. The man with the scythe remarks his surprise that Dunarith was able to defeat the monster without his beast form and leaves, reminding him again about their contract.

Dunarith apologizes to Aldo about all of his secrets, but Aldo is very understanding and knows that Dunarith has a reason to keep them. Dunarith laughs and reiterates how Aldo is too nice and may be easily tricked if he were a con artist, affectionately annoying Aldo yet again.

Quest 3: Where Have They Gone?[edit]

Dunarith and Aldo head to Snake Bone Island to attend an event happening in Konium. Dunarith tells Aldo that he and Bran are from Konium, but it's been a while since he last visited. He tells Aldo that he is returning to attend the annual illumination ceremony. The ceremony is a unique ritual to the island and has been passed down since ancient times: the beasts of the island prepare grass-paper lanterns for the returning souls and then release the lanterns into the sky. Dunarith clarifies that departed souls do not actually come back but the beasts on the island believe that their deceased friends and family visit from the afterlife each year. As a traveling Purifier, it is just as important for Dunarith to help with the ceremony as it is to perform Ascensions. Aldo offers help to Dunarith if he needs any and they head to Konium.

At Konium, Dunarith and Aldo run into a Beast Clan Senior, a Beast Youth, and a Beast Lady, who ask Dunarith how he's been. Dunarith tells them that he's been doing fine and has a reliable friend, Aldo, who he travels with. Dunarith asks how the preparation for the illumination ceremony has been going. One of the beasts tells him that unfortunately, there are not enough lanterns for the ceremony due to a mix up. Dunarith offers to help make more lanterns but the other beasts tell him that it would be too much to ask of him since he cannot turn into his beast form, which would make the process dangerous. Aldo confusedly asks for clarification but the Beast Clan Senior tells the other two to be careful of what they say. Dunarith reassures them that it'll be okay because he has a strong friend fighting besides him. The Senior reluctantly agrees to his help and Dunarith tells him that he won't let his past bother him again. The three beasts leave to check what other materials are needed for the lanterns. Aldo asks Dunarith what he was referring to when he talked about not letting his past bother him and that he can't transform. Aldo also realizes that Dunarith was once relieved after a battle because he did not have to transform, referring to the events of the second quest. It sounds like Dunarith has the ability to transform into a beast but does not want to. Dunarith decides to tell Aldo about his past and begins by saying that it is something he cannot escape from as it was an incident that caused him to lose his sister forever.

It happened years ago around the time that the illumination ceremony was going on when he was still a child. He and his sister were secretly planning to make a lantern, so they traveled to Igoma to collect materials without telling the grown-ups. Dunarith had looked away for just a moment but his sister disappeared…

In the middle of the story, the three beasts come back. The Beast Youth tells Dunarith that the only material they need is the Yuen Herb. Aldo quickly changes the conversation, telling the beasts that they did not interrupt anything and asks Dunarith if he is familiar with the herb. Dunarith replies that he knows it well and it grows in Igoma. Aldo thinks to himself that the herb could be what Dunarith and his sister went searching for as they had also gone to Igoma. Aldo and Dunarith leave to collect the herb and the scene pans to a Beast Tyke and a Beast Lass who had overheard the conversation about making lanterns. The boy tells his sister that they should help, as everyone would be super happy if they made some. His sister agrees. The girl then ponders and says that their parents had told them to never leave the village because there are terrible ghosts out there this time of the year. The boys tell him that it is just a made-up legend as the grown-ups go in and out of the village all the time. Reassured, the two siblings follow Dunarith and Aldo to Igoma.

In Igoma, Dunarith tells Aldo that the Yuen Herb is used as the heat source to lift the lanterns into the air. He asks Bran for help to find the herb as he can smell the herb and knows where it grows. Aldo comments that Bran has a strong sense of smell for a bird. Dunarith laughs and tells Aldo that Bran can sense smells coming from souls and it just so happens that the Yuen Herb absorbs smell from souls making the whole thing quite convenient. They follow Bran and collect more than enough herbs for the lanterns. Dunarith tells Aldo that when the Yuen Herbs are lit, they burn with an amazingly colorful flame and are meant to guide the souls to the sky, back to their proper place. Aldo says that he can't wait to see the lantern illumination. Dunarith tells him that the sight of hundreds of lantern flames brightening the sky of Snake Bone Island is simply breathtaking and it makes one think that the souls (which actually go to Purgatory) can find their way to the peaceful world of the afterlife. Dunarith comments that he sometimes wishes that he actually believed in such things and Aldo asks if he is going to prepare a lantern for his sister. Dunarith declines and states that he has never done that for her and is not going to start this year. Aldo asks why not as he could try to reach her in Purgatory by lighting a lantern. However, Dunarith tells Aldo that his sister's soul is not actually in Purgatory. Aldo asks what that means, but they are interrupted by the boy who followed them crying for help. Aldo asks what he was doing out in Igoma alone and the boy replies that his sister is gone. He looked everywhere, but he cannot find her. Dunarith loses his composure and yells at the boy, saying that he was supposed to stay in the village, and asking him what he was thinking. Aldo tries to calm Dunarith down and tells him that it is not the time to hassle the kid. Dunarith tries to calm down, apologizes, and asks the kids where he last saw his sister. The boy replies that he just saw her down the path and Dunarith tells him that he and Aldo will find his sister and that he should head back to the village. The beast boy agrees, apologizes for heading out to Igoma, and asks them to please find his sister and bring her home. Dunarith tells him that they will find her and bring her back no matter what. After the boy leaves, Aldo comments that he had never seen Dunarith so intense before and Dunarith replies that he was like the boy long ago but yelling at the boy won't change anything. He laughs and comments that it's silly that he still cannot let go of the past; he can never atone for his mistake but he can at least save the boy's sister. Aldo questions how a child can disappear without a trace and Dunarith tells him that he has an idea and for them to start moving to where the boy last saw his sister.

Aldo and Dunarith look for the girl but they cannot find her. Aldo asks if Bran can search for her and Dunarith tells him that he is already helping, but the smell of the Yuen Herb distracts him this time of the year, so it is not easy for him to recognize her smell. Aldo states that they will just have to search the entire island but Dunarith reminds Aldo that he had an idea and to follow him. They arrive at an entrance to the Snake Dream. Dunarith tells Aldo that it is a secret tunnel dug by a rare monster that lives in Snake Dream. They conclude that it is highly likely that the girl could be inside and they head into the entrance. Aldo and Dunarith arrive inside Snake Dream and Dunarith comments that it brings back memories as nothing has changed. Dunarith warns Aldo that they are dealing with a monster that knows the taste of a living soul. The monsters once used to feed on the Yuen Herbs that carried the scent of the souls but they began feasting on living souls starting with his sister's. Aldo realizes that this was the reason why his sister's soul does not exist in Purgatory. Dunarith tells him that he had been telling the children ghost stories and warning parents to keep their children in the village, but no matter what he did, something was bound to happen eventually, but this time he will end it for good.

Aldo and Dunarith are interrupted by a scream for help and they quickly run towards the voice. They find the unconscious girl with a monster hovering over her. Dunarith is relieved that they arrived before her soul became tainted. Originally, the monster only fed on the scents from Yuen Herbs, not even capable of chewing, swallowing, or ingesting them, but when the monster holds someone, their soul experiences a never-ending torture as it is slowly nibbled away. After the monster enjoys the taste long enough, it spits the souls back up like gum, and Dunarith proclaims that it is a huge disgrace to the victim's fate, divine providence, and all other beings and it must be punished as it is how his sister's soul became an evil spirit. Aldo tells Dunarith that he has every right to be angry and they begin to fight the monster after Dunarith tells it that he has waited all his life for a change to end it with Aldo telling him that he will fight by his side and they will save the girl no matter what it takes. Unfortunately, the monster is stronger than they thought, and it overpowers them. Dunarith comments that it must have attained its power by eating Reliath's soul. If their strength is not enough, then he only has one option left. Aldo tries to stop him from transforming, blocking a hit from the monster. He tells Dunarith to grab the girl and run away, leaving the monster to him. Dunarith realizes that the past is repeating itself as it is exactly the same as the day he failed to save his sister, Reliath. Aldo urges Dunarith to run away but Dunarith refuses and tells him that he will not run away anymore.

Dunarith transforms into his beast form, an animal that seems to be a mix of an eagle and a lion with a blue face and arm emerging from his back. Dunarith asks Reliath for her forgiveness and tells him that it will only last for a moment and no one has to see her like this for long. Dunarith quickly takes down the monster and transforms back into his normal form. He asks Aldo if he is alright and Aldo reassures him that he is, questioning what he just saw. Dunarith tells Aldo that his beast form is where his sister's soul, Reliath's evil spirit, resides. Aldo realizes that was the reason why he had insisted on not transforming. Dunarith continues on and says that once her soul was consumed by the monster, she could no longer sustain itself until reincarnation and would disappear forever. Once he realized this, Dunarith allowed her evil spirit to curse him, trapping her in the overworld. A man with a scythe (presumably Zeviro) appears and tells them that it was the key point of their contract as he would have normally taken her soul but had agreed to let it slide in return for Dunarith to keep sending him souls of the beast. Aldo protests that the man was taking advantage of Dunarith's tragedy but the man says that he is doing Dunarith a favor. Aldo angrily calls the man a monster but Dunarith tells Aldo that he does not need to say anything more as he is happy that Aldo cares about him and his sister. The man tells Dunarith that he had made his job easier as he removed the cause of his souls turning into evil spirits and left them. Dunarith and Aldo also leave Snake Dream and bring the girl back to Konium.

They meet up with the boy in Ignoma with the Beast Youth. The youth said that he was worried when they did not return and had set out to look for them. Dunarith shows that they had brought the girl back safely and the boy runs to his sister, apologizing for what had happened. Dunarith tells them that the monster won't come back for them ever again as Aldo had taken care of it. Aldo tries to disagree, but Dunarith moves on and asks if the youth could take care of the children, handing over to him the herbs he and Aldo had previously collected. The Beast Youth tells Dunarith that he will go finish up the rest of the lanterns and that they can make their way to Mescita. The youth and siblings leave and Aldo asks why he told the other beast that Aldo had saved the girl. Dunarith tells Aldo that he had never told the village the truth about his sister and that they think she rests peacefully in the afterlife which is better for the sake of his sister's legacy. Aldo tells him that he will go along with whatever Dunarith wishes and Dunarith apologizes for keeping so many secrets. Aldo replies that he should not worry about it and that he can count on him as he personally knows how difficult it is to keep secrets from others. Dunarith thanks Aldo for his understanding and they start heading to Mescita for more preparations. As Aldo heads off first, Dunarith muses that he is glad to have Aldo around as his friend.

As they arrive at Snake Skull Mescita, they see that the villagers are not there yet. Dunarith tells him that there is still time before the ceremony and comments that it is ironic that he has met someone from Purgatory and knows that the afterlife does not exist but is still working as a Purifier, teaching people about the afterlife that does not actually await them. He asks Aldo if he could possibly name someone else who is living a life as twisted as him as he is performing Ascensions for his own ends. Aldo speaks up and says that he does not agree with him as he has seen that Dunarith cares so much about the people who have passed and showed compassion for their loved ones. Even if the afterlife is made up, the souls that he helps still believe in it, so for those left behind, it would be the same as the truth. Dunarith tells Aldo that he does not know what to say in response to that, but the village will be there soon as it is almost time for the festival.

The villagers gather and slowly release the lanterns in their hands while Dunarith speaks: "We spray for those who await us in the afterlife. May the souls of our loved ones rest in peace. Our prayers shall guide the souls of our friends and family back to their resting place. Our hopes shall lighten the path to the harmonious world where they belong."

The orange lanterns light up the sky above the island like and Aldo comments that the view is incredible and breathtaking. Dunarith comments that it is odd as the concept of the afterlife and the lanterns do not carry any meaning but a part of him still believes that one day, he will make a lantern for Reliath. Aldo asks if there is a way to change an evil spirit back but Dunarith is not sure and does not know anyone who can answer the question either. However, he knows that each time he performs an Ascension for a soul, a little bit of his sister's soul fades away, but still does not think she will reach Purgatory one day. Aldo tells him that he should not doubt his feelings and that there has to be a reason why it happens. Dunarith tells Aldo that before he had met him, he had almost given up but now things have changed as Aldo still travels with him and helps him even though he has such dark secrets. Bran flies down to join them and they share a laugh with Dunarith reassuring Bran that Bran will always be his best buddy. Dunarith tells Aldo that he is a liar and far from the respected Purifier that people can look up to. He had been performing Ascensions for his own sake, trying to atone for his past mistakes, but deep down, he still wishes to guide those souls to their final resting place and hopes that every lost soul will be saved so that they too, may light up the sky.

AS Quest: The Blessings Fall[edit]

After an Ascension, Dunarith tries to hurry Aldo out of Konium, but he is too late and the elderly man who took care of him and his siter when they used to live in the village approaches him to ask for some help in the prosperity ceremony. This ceremony celebrates new life, so Dunarith, who deals with the dead, is afraid that his presence may have dire consequences on the children. The elder, however, insists that all that Dunarith has to do is pray from his heart. When Aldo also pushes for his participation, Dunarith is left with no choice but to take part of it.

Dunarith thus changes to his Seele Gnade Style and joins Aldo at Snake Skull Mescita and explains that the ceremony involves blessing new life with the wings to achieve, represented by the feathers of his outfit. He elaborates that the children to be blessed are those who are of the age when their horns start to grow, as those who wouldn’t live long enough to reach that age were believed to have returned to the garden of heaven.

Dunarith thus successfully performs the ceremony, but he still feels wrong about it, since he doesn’t feel like he belongs to the village, as his sister is unable to pass and he can neither celebrate her death nor life. Aldo then decides to give him and his sister a blessing of his own, which is greatly appreciated.

As they celebrate their friendship, however, the Master of Calamity appears from the Snake Dream and threatens to eat the children’s blessed souls, stating the need to make a new minion. As he tries to mark one the kids, Aldo puts himself in the way, receiving the mark instead. Before leaving through the portal, the monster recognizes Reliath’s soul within Dunarith as the one that escaped him the last time he awoke. Seeing Aldo in great pain, Dunarith gives priority to taking him back to Konium instead of fighting the monster.

Back in Konium, Dunarith realizes that Aldo’s mark is turning him into an evil spirit to then be devoured by the monster! Dunarith casts a spell on Aldo to temporarily quell the hunger he feels, but it made Reliath’s power swell within him, making him feel a bit of the despair she felt. They resolve to kill the soul sucking bastard as soon as possible, and they know he is in Damaku thanks to Bran’s scouting. They head there, as the man with the scythe (Zeviro) observes them.

Aldo and Dunarith find and seemingly defeat the Master of Calamity, but his soul survives and makes Reliath’s soul go berserk, making Dunarith lose control and take his beast form, although he tries to resist. The Master of Calamity proposes he lets Dunarith and his sister go if Dunarith kills Aldo, but he obviously refuses. However, Dunarith isn’t able to control himself and slashes Aldo, who doesn’t defend himself.

Dunarith is horrified by what he has done to his dear friend, who was everything to him, but Aldo’s soul is still lingering, although incorporeal, refusing to let the monster feed on him. The man with the scythe appears and gives Aldo the power from all of the souls that Dunarith has guided to their final resting place and freed from their endless wandering, allowing him to cut the Master of Calamity down. The man with the scythe then reveals that he actually saved Aldo right before Dunarith’s attack by borrowing his soul with his scythe and that he had an interest in eliminating that evil spirit. When Aldo figures out that he actually wanted to do something for Dunarith, the man agrees that he just cannot stand to see him cry like that and sends Aldo back into his body.

Aldo wakes up a little confused, but certain to have slain the monster and avenged Reliath. Dunarith is apologetic and Aldo suggests they go back to Konium first.

After assuring everyone that they are fine, Aldo tells Dunarith that he cannot hold it against him that he chose his family over him, since he cannot tell he wouldn’t have done the same in his place, as he didn’t abandon him, but just protected her. When Dunarith voices his worry that he selfishly didn’t allow Reliath’s soul to disappear, Aldo reveals that he saw a gentle, yet sad light twinkling by his side and that his sister’s heart is connected to his just like Aldo’s connected to Feinne’s. Aldo then has Dunarith promise him that they will keep helping each other, leaving him astounded that Aldo stills wants to be friends with him.

After his promise to Aldo, Dunarith vows to Reliath that he will find a way to save her, just as a feather fall down in front of him to bless him.

Gameplay[edit]

Dunarith can be used as a wind-elemental support, healer, or mage. He can greatly increase the speed of the team before activating Another Force, increase type resistance or wind-type attacks, heal and buff the team's critical rates, or build the AF bar with his 3x slash attack.
