Story[edit]

Character Quest 1[edit]

Vestiges of Kindness

Darunis and his fellow guards are getting increasingly busy protecting the merchants who are getting accosted by beasts...

Darunis and Aldo arrive at Unigan and introduce themselves to a member of Unigan’s Guard. The guard states that recently, a band of beasts have been stealing goods from merchants. He wants Aldo and Darunis to watch over the road through Karek Swampland in his place.

Upon entering Karek Swampland, Darunis and Aldo run into monsters blocking the road. They attack. Darunis creates an opening with his arrows, then Aldo rushes in with his sword. After the battle, Aldo wants to continue down the road for the merchant’s sake. Darunis refuses. “If you beat an animal too long, they’re liable to strike back,” he says. This conversation led to Darunis lecturing Aldo.

They are interrupted by sounds of a scuffle between a merchant and beasts. A battle takes place and ends with a beast promising that he had a change of heart. Darunis takes pity on the beast and as a result, gets attacked while his back is turned. After the return to Unigan, Darunis doubts if showing mercy was the right thing to do.

Character Quest 2[edit]

Not Beast Nor Man

A rumor about the beasts is spreading around the children of Baruoki. Darunis has to find out what it is...

In Baruoki, an old man approaches Darunis and Aldo. He asks them to check the Moonlight Forests for beasts. Once they arrive, they meet the old man’s grandson looking for herbs. The grandson remarks how quiet it is in the forest.

Aldo and Darunis head to the center of the forest for clues, but Darunis finds no evidence of beasts in the area. He predicts that the beasts knew they were coming and left before they arrived. Nostalgic, Darunis notices the scene around them. He remembers how he used to go into the forest to train. Aldo remembers Darunis saving his life, by protecting him from monsters there long ago. Darunis states that already, the monster that attacked Aldo was close to death. To save Aldo, all Darunis had to do was to speed up the process. That was the day he stopped using a sword. Aldo asks why, and they get interrupted.

Someone cries for help deeper within the Moonlight Forest. They discover a beast woman is being attacked by a monster, and Aldo immediately runs to defend her. Darunis hesitates before joining Aldo. Right before the battle, Darunis reveals that he gave up using the sword in order to defend Aldo from afar. After the battle the beast woman is wounded and Darunis offers first aid. Then, the beast woman leaves in peace.

Darunis and Aldo head back to Baruoki. Darunis lies and reports to the old man that there was no monster, nor beast in the forest. He assures the old man that the forest is safe. “I don’t want to incite violence,” he says to Aldo, “Not towards myself, and not towards that beast woman.”
