In order to progress through the Tower of Stars you need to use substances to shift pedestals up and down. This can get confusing very quickly, but basically the substances are scaled from lightest to heaviest, the lightest lift the pedestals up and the heaviest weighs them down, it's also indicated by the changing colors. K=lightest M=neutral C=heavy E=heaviest
Floor 1 head to the north until you find a door, that's where you will obtain your first Reagent M. Go back near the entrance, there should be a ornament which has a crystal on it. Use Reagent M and a set of stairs will be revealed.
Floor 2 Head south and then go east, do not take the stairs yet. You should see a door, go inside and obtain Reagent K, go back and take the aforementioned stairs.
Floor 3 Nothing of note here, just some treasure you can pick up if you wish so, take the next set of stairs.
Floor 4 Open the door right in front of you with Reagent K, go north until you see a door. Go inside to obtain Reagent C, go back and open the next door with Reagent C.
Floor 5 There is some treasure here you can pick up if you want. Other than that just proceed upstairs.
Floor 6 Right in front of you, use Reagent K, go east and the door should be open. Go inside, then west and look for a pedestal directly in front of your screen (the same one you used previously with Reagent K) use Reagent M on it. To your east, a door should open. Go upstairs.
Floor 7 Go west, then south, then east, then use K. Go west, south, west and find an embedded open pedestal. Use M and a wall opens to the west. Go around, use C (the same one you used previously with M), take the stairs.
Floor 8 Go south and at the first crossroads take the stairs, the next floor is a boss battle.
Note: I didn't include Reagent E as you do not need it to progress through the story, but if you are curious it opens a secret passage for treasure and easier access to come back and leave here, it's on Floor 6 go west from where you used K and then use C, defeat the Horror standing right in front of it and obtain E.
