Character Quest 1[edit]

Akane: Asking the Master for Lessons

Akane is visiting Baruoki and is enjoying the lively atmosphere Aldo will show her around...

While walking around Baruoki, Akane and Aldo are enjoying the peaceful demeanor of the town. Akane notices an air of excitement. Aldo explains that the 300th anniversary of the town is approaching and the town is preparing for the festival. Akane, who had spent the majority of her youth training with the Itto Ryu Dojo, immediately is excited at the idea of attending the event.

Upon meeting a girl from the village, the child asks Aldo if he is on a date with Akane, leaving him flustered. While Aldo is explaining their relationship, or lack there-of, Akane becomes enamored with the candy the girl is holding. After explaining that it is honey candy that she bought from the Candy Man in town, Akane decides she must challenge him to a duel to see whose cuts are the smoothest. Aldo quickly talks her out of it, as confectioners usually don’t know much about combat, but decides to go and visit the vendor since the occasion one is in town is a rarity. The little girl tells them that she last saw him at the tavern, talking to the barkeep about his mission to “find the legendary honey and make the ultimate candy!”

When entering the tavern, Akane immediately forgets Aldo’s conversation about not fighting a candy-maker, and proceeds to challenge the man. Aldo quickly cuts her off and reminds her of what they came to do. Akane begs the man for his legendary honey candy, but to no avail. He explains that he travelled to Baruoki in hopes of acquiring the honey produced in Moonlight Forest, but the monsters make it impossible for him to retrieve it. Akane, after hearing the “master” candy maker concede defeat, won’t accept this. She shares with him advice from her older brother: “Where there’s a will there’s a way!”. Aldo commends her for this advice and agrees, saying it is important to keep trying. Akane is taken aback by this, as she always thought the phrase meant, “If you’re going to give up, you might as well die now.” Doubling down on her initial advice, Akane tells the man, “If you keep fighting, your dreams will come true!”, and offers to retrieve the honey for the man herself.

Upon spotting a beehive after journeying to the center of Moonlight Forest, Akane reveals that she used to collect honey all the time when she was younger but was never successful. She explains she always used to attack it head on and get swarmed, but she was always saved by her older brother. After revealing she intends to do the same as before, Aldo tries to get her to reconsider given all her past failures, but she explains that this is just how she is. “This is just how I am… I never look back, only forwards!” Before Aldo can stop her, Akane charges forward, headfirst into the hive. She actually acquires the honey this time, but is shortly followed by a swarm of hornets. After a quick battle, Akane is ecstatic that she finally succeeded and didn’t even need her brother’s help but admits that she still has much more to learn and improve on. Aldo and Akane make their way back to Baruoki so Akane can observe the confectioner’s skills, but as the pair fade off-screen, Shion emerges from nearby bushes and says, “Same as always…”

Back at the tavern in Baruoki, the travelling pair return to the candy man and give him the honey he had requested. Overcome with gratitude, he admits that there isn’t much he can offer them in return, and Akane seizes her chance to ask the master confectioner to share his renowned skills with her. Confused by the request, Akane goes on to explain that “You can always learn from a master’s craft, whatever his skill may be.” Aldo and the man are taken back at the sudden profoundness from her. Akane laughs and admits it’s another saying of her brother’s that she doesn’t entirely grasp. Regardless of understanding the meaning, she admits she has always dreamed of meeting a master and learning from them.

After the demonstration, Akane concedes that she’s an amatuer when it comes to the kitchen, and didn’t understand much of what the man was saying. Aldo starts to question why she asked for the lesson to begin with, but Akane says it was actually worth it. After all of that, she finally learned that candy making doesn’t really help her sword skills at all.

Character Quest 2[edit]

Akane: Paying the Traveler Back

Akane meets up with an old travelling companion in the Unigan tavern. It seems she has a problem she needs help with.

Strolling through the streets of Unigan, a woman approaches Aldo and Akane. Akane, immediately recognizing her, informs Aldo that this woman helped her in the beginning of her travels when she left the lands of the East. The woman remarks that Akane seems to be doing well, given that she always seemed to find herself in trouble. Akane laughs and says while she hasn’t learned much since then, she’s found plenty of companions to help her along the way. The two women decide to make their way into the tavern, but as they do Shion appears from the shadows and calls out to Aldo. He tells him that after listening to what Akane just said, she really depends on him. Shion admits that he’s not sure how to feel about this as her older brother, but he trusts Aldo regardless of this. Disappearing again, Shion tells Aldo he’s counting on him to keep her safe.

Inside the tavern, the woman asks Akane if she ever found her brother, as that was her purpose to come to Migleina all along. Akane becomes flustered and tells her that’s confidential information. As far as everyone knows, she is just here to train because if her brother were to find out he would surely kill her. Quickly switching the subject, Akane asks her where she’s off to and the woman states that she’s currently stuck. As she’s explaining that Karek Swampland is crawling with monsters and it's dangerous to go alone, Akane excitedly cuts her off, stating she has something important to attend to and rushes outside. She tells Aldo she wants to take care of the monsters to repay the woman for her help all those years ago, but Aldo thinks they should simply escort her. Not wanting the woman to think they pitied her, Akane stays resolute in her idea and the pair make their way to the swamp.

During an uneasy exchange with a sentinel blocking their path, the guard is surprised after observing her fighting stance as he had never heard of a female samurai before. After Akane’s attempt to strike the sentinel, he concedes and allows them to proceed as long as they help him remove the beasts. After quickly dispatching the beasts, the pair return to the sentinel to be met with mockery as the man still doesn’t believe Akane to be a true samurai. Admitting she is still in training, she asks the man to help her gain more experience and moves forward to spar. Before she can even draw her sword, the guard flees leaving Akane disappointed. Disheartened, she reflects on another piece of advice from her brother: “When pressing forward doesn’t work, sometimes it’s good to fall back…”

Returning to the tavern, the woman is incensed and demands to know what Akane has been doing. Akane, embarrassed, tells the woman she only ran off to repay the favor without making a big deal about it. She defiantly states that, that’s just how she is. The woman, seeing through her, thanks her for running off and taking care of the monsters for her and compliments her on her sense of justice. Promptly saying her goodbyes, she tells Aldo to keep an eye out for Akane, and wishes him luck with his new “troublesome little sister”. Akane overhears Aldo reflecting over this as he says she’s more like a little brother, and says that’s exactly what her older brother used to say.

Character Quest AS[edit]

Akane’s Heart for a Warrior

With the castle town as a backdrop, Akane and Aldo reminisce about all the things that have happened to them. As they do someone brings them a letter.

While sightseeing in Izana, Akane thinks back on all the times her and Shion used to go kite riding together. Suddenly approached by an Izana guard who addresses Akane as a student of the Itto Ryu, Akane reveals that she’s never been a student. She simply copies the style and stance of the Itto Ryu after observing her older brother for so long. The man states this is inconsequential as she was requested by name to receive this letter from someone of high stature. Upon reading the note, it’s clearly a letter from a secret admirer and Aldo congratulates her. Akane, completely misunderstanding the intentions of the writing, becomes overwhelmed with excitement as she has never received a formal invitation to duel. After Aldo explains it further, she admits that she’s quite dense when it comes to these matters. Upon learning Aldo plans to not come along out of fear of being a third wheel, she begs him to come as her brother was always there for her when she did something for the first time. Aldo concedes and admits it’s probably better if he comes along, prompting Akane to remark that Aldo sounds just like her brother.

After waiting at the rendezvous in Kurosagi Castle, the pair are greeted by a man whose face is obscured by a hood. After revealing he is the one who sent the letter, the man delivers Akane a thinly veiled ultimatum: Get “lovey-dovey” with me or something might happen to your brother. The man goes on to explain that he could cause him great harm with just a snap of his fingers, or he could even bring him home. He reveals his plan to make Akane his second wife, as that would be enough to make Shion suffer. Aldo, slowly piecing the puzzle together, Aldo begins to state his suspicions before he’s cut off. Lord Genshin appears from under the hood with a grand reveal, and to no avail, Akane expresses that she has no idea who this man is. Akane infuriates Lord Genshin with her obliviousness. Demanding to know her answer to his proposal to be his second wife, Akane curtly refuses. On top of having hesitations to fight for the position of first wife, she reveals that she has someone she has sworn herself to but refuses to divulge the identity as she is sworn to secrecy. This intrigues the Lord, and refusing to take no for an answer, decides to give her time to prepare herself before her forced marriage. Once the two are alone, Akane tells Aldo not to worry, as she has someone who may be able to help. Hopeful, the two head off to the Cat Shrine where Akane’s contact should be waiting.

Upon finding Shigure there, Akane divulges everything that has happened. Assuaging Aldo’s concerns of involving people, she tells him that long ago, she and Shigure had sworn an oath together, so they can trust him. Shigure instructs them to bide their time and avoid Genshin’s advances while he does whatever he can to help. He admits that Akane’s skills of deception aren’t the best, and is quick to remind her that if she doesn’t, war awaits her with Lady Ageha, Lord Genshin’s first wife. Once again misinterpreting people’s words, Akane becomes excited at the prospect of battle. Shigure tries to convince her to avoid him as much as possible before running off to put his plan in motion. Despite both Shigure and Aldo’s warnings, Akane decides to return to Lord Genshin’s palace after all. She claims, “This is the first time my inner woman has awakened, and it would be a waste to just let her sleep!” Knowing he won’t be able to change her mind, Aldo agrees to see this through to the end with her. Grateful for his help, Akane thanks him and suddenly remembers that her father had left her clothes for such an occasion. When Aldo asks if it’s a wedding gown, she explains all she knows she’s to wear it when she comes of age.

Upon returning to Kurosagi Castle, Akane apologizes to Aldo for keeping him waiting and walks in wearing her new clothes. Aldo, obviously confused, asks her if these are the clothes she was talking about earlier. She goes on to explain that they are her father’s clothes that she begged him for when she was child. Eventually he agreed, but he would only pass them to her when she was married. Regardless of how she acquired them, she feels a surge of energy while wearing them. To her, it’s like fighting alongside her father. Hearing the commotion from the other end of the room, a voice demands to know who is there. Approaching Lord Genshin and his wife Lady Ageha, Akane states her name and Lord Genshin’s intentions to become “lovey-dove” with her. Earning a brief shout and a glare from his wife, he becomes flustered and claims it’s his right to have multiple wives as a lord.

Akane, not one to be distracted from the task at hand, interrupts the arguing couple. Drawing her katana, Akane challenges Lady Ageha to a duel. A true rivalry of womanly spirit, she states that whoever wins will become Lord Genshin’s first wife. Before Aldo has a chance to stop her, she swings her blade. Showing unbelievable speed and agility, Ageha switches places with Akane and continues to dodge her flurry of attacks. Aldo, remarking that the woman could hardly be human, is quickly proven correct as she transforms into the same form as the beast that steals Aldo’s face in Chapter (??). Akane is impressed, remarking that she is an opponent like no other and one truly worthy of being Lord Genshin’s first wife. However after a short battle, the face-stealing monster pretending to be Lady Ageha is defeated.

Thinking he’s now a widower, Lord Genshin is in shock. Akane is ecstatic with her victory, but fails to read the room. Excitedly, she informs Lord Genshin that as the victor, she will be taking Ageha’s place as first wife. In shock from watching his wife killed in front of him, the fact his wife was apparently a face-stealing monster this whole time, and the fact this girl is somehow related to the stoic and silent Shion, Lod Genshin stands in disbelief. Before another word can be spoken, the real Lady Ageha enters the throne room demanding to know what the disturbance is about. Akane tries to fight her as well, but Lord Genshin yells at her to leave and storms out the room, leaving Akane upset that she angered her Lord.

Later, Akane reports everything to Shion, ready to abandon the life of the samurai or leave the East forever, but he simply tells her not to do it again and that he’ll smooth things over with Lord Genshin. As Shion leaves, Aldo tells Akane that she’s now free to marry Shigure, but she explains that the oath she made was simply to always go to him if something happened, because he was worried for her empty head.

She also admits that the last night she saw her parents, her father jokingly had her agree to marry her brother when she’d get older. Like Shion before, Aldo tells Akane not to spread this last story around, as it may cause unnecessary confusion. Akane finally asks Aldo to teach her the nuances of love, much to his dismay.

Not having been informed, Shigure is shown still teaching a ninja to impersonate Akane.
