Check the ! mark at the southwest area of Last Island when playing as Varuo to start an event.
Return to the location as a human to start the subquest.
After clearing the subquest, a photo studio will be built at the path in the southwest area of Last Island. You will be asked to bring specific cats from various locations with different outfits to the photo studio for a photo shoot. Each set requires two cats, the first cat must not be dressed up and the second cat will require a specific combination of cat equipment obtained from crafting.

After completion of the initial quest, you can interact with Aldo's bed to switch between controlling your human party and Varuo. As Varuo, you will not meet any random encounters on the map, and NPCs will have different dialogue when interacted with. Your range of exploration will not be as large until further updates to the feature.
Various maps will also have silver sparkle points where you can gather cat material. Cat gifts will be marked on the map as target reticles, and can be exchanged with the various cats across the overworld for more cat materials. You can only hold up to four cat gifts at a time. Investigate the underground cave in Rucyana Sands, and you can expand this capacity to eight.
Each cat has a different reaction to each gift which affects how fast your friendship with them builds up; past a certain point, that cat will begin to give Varuo rarer cat materials in exchange for gifts. Cat gifts and sparkle points will, like with regular sparkle points, regenerate after 1 hour.
You can also interact with certain spots on the overworld to unlock hidden passageways, opening up alternate routes or even discovering treasure.
You will never enter a random encounter as Varuo. Running into a Horror will simply force you away to a different part of the map.
While controlling a human party, you can now register Cats to your collection. You can also interact with an already-registered cat and switch them with Varuo, getting them to accompany your party. This feature is, at the moment, cosmetic, and there are few gameplay effects with your cat of choice.

As a human, you can sell any cat materials you've gathered from your ventures as Varuo to the Cat Shop, available via the Cat Madame within Baruoki Weapon Shop or Cat Robo within the Catography Studio at Last Island after it is unlocked. They are used to make cat equipment that can be equipped onto your current cat. The cat equipment will automatically be unequipped if you change your cat. If you have equipped Varuo, he will be wearing them when venturing out.
You can also obtain Meow Coin from monthly Trial Rewards which you can use at the Cat Shop to buy premium cat equipment modeled after certain characters; see Category:Character cat outfit for matching character sets.

As Varuo, travel to the healing point in Moonlight Forest. Explore the right edge of the map to unlock a secret passageway, leading up to Cat Road, a map filled with Horrors. Find and talk with NPC that is asking for help.
Return to the area while controlling your human party, and you can rescue the NPC located in the center of the map. He will be escorted to the entrance of Cat Road, and will offer various items in exchange for 50 Chaos Drops each. The Wurger Horrors drop 1 to 3 Chaos Drops, while the great shadow, Rotte Rivel, will yield 50. The Forest Guardians do not drop anything.
His stock contains eight Jadeite of Life, three badges which grant immunity to Stun, Bind, and Rage respectively, and seven high-tier "MP Consumption-" Grastas, one for each non-Sword weapon.
As Varuo, start by heading to the pier in Rinde to travel to Zarbo. Then, head into the rightmost house on the middle lane, and touch the straw dummy to travel to Sarupa. Head to the top-right corner of Sarupa to access another secret passageway, opening up the Charol Plains Cat Road. Find the NPCs at the top-left corner of the map.
Then, return to the area as your human party and rescue the NPCs. They will remain at the map's entrance offering various items for 50 Chaos Crystals each. The William and Fusalis Horrors drop 1-3 Chaos Crystals each, while the main boss, Regenwurm will give 50.
Their stock consists of 7 Jadeite of Attack, 2 Jadeite of Support, a Sleep immunity badge, 7 "Almighty Power" Grastas which give a passive type boost to units of certain personalities, and "Power of Curses" and "Wisdom of Curses" Grasta that teach a debuff skill to the equipping character.
